Object: To show and compare canna cultivars from our Plant Heritage National Collection of Cannas, and also from our Hart Canna Online Catalogue.

Plan: We will grow 3 to 5 samples of each variety (depending on size) in 3 avenues of about 50 varieties in each avenue. These will be grouped by size and type, for instance, we shall have tall, medium and short varieties, grouped under colours: red orange, pink, yellow, white, variegated. We shall also have a section of the species. We shall separately have an exhibition of cannas grown in pots.
These will be planted out in our field on 1st June. They should all be flowering by August. The trial will end in mid September.

History of our canna trials This is our third trial of cannas. The first was in 2006, and we called it "Canna Trial International". Varieties were submitted by breeders in the UK, USA, Israel, Australia, Holland, France, hence the name "International", which we have retained. The winning variety was 'Golden Orb', a new variety bred by Jim Ranger, which is now one of our best selling varieties. We can hope to receive candidates from overseas in future years. This year we have provided all the varieties and species ourself. Our employee, Janis Raubiska, is responsible for the trial, and will be in attendance on the public days.

Royal Horticultural Society Canna Trials The RHS have held trials of cannas on their Wisley trials ground in 1906 and 2002. 22 varieties have been given the RHS AGM Award. Two from the 1906 trial, 'Wyoming' and 'Louis Cayeux' are still available and are present in our 2018 trial. Five varieties that were given awards in the 2002 trial are presently lost to cultivation ('Amundsen', 'Aphrodite', 'Ingebourg' 'Picasso' 'Schwabische Heimat'). We would love to find them again. Incidentally, the 'Picasso' and 'Aphrodite' sometimes seen in garden centres are recent re-namings and are not the same varieties that received the AGM award. Those award-winning cannas that we know to exist, and we think are correctly named, 17 varieties, are grown in our own 2018 trial, and are labelled with the RHS AGM Insignia, award of merit and are shown in the list below.

Location: Lincluden Nursery. Shaftesbury Road, Bisley, Surrey, GU24 9EN (Find the Hen and Chickens pub, on the A322, and we are just around the corner, 2nd turn on the right).

Visitors: Visitors will be welcome at our Open Days
